Pan-textual Commentaries on the 1983 Code This page is being reorganized. Your patience is appreciated. |
|
Overview
Serious canonical research always entails awareness of the opinions of the major commentators on the canon(s) in question.
|
Most pan-textual commentaries on the 1983 Code follow a common ratio: canon-by-canon presentation of (usually) every canon (sometimes providing the Latin text, sometimes not), followed by private commentary (usually prepared by members of a single canonical society or faculty) at greater or lesser length. Each entry is specifically identifiable by author, though not always easily. When citing modern pan-textual commentaries, identify the specific author by name.
The following works rank among the most important pantextual commentaries on Johanno-Pauline law. They are set out here first according to language and then generally in reverse chronological order. Some works have undergone more than one edition already and some are translations from other languages.

Reviews: =. Although offered as an entirely new commentary, there are at least some places where the text is taken nearly verbatim from the CLSA Comm. (1985). Excellent index, good topical bibliographies.

Commento (1985). P. Pinto, ed., Commento al Codice di Diritto Canonico (Urbaniana University Press: Roma, 1985), 1162 pp. Canons in Latin & Italian, commentary in Italian, treatment is canon-by-canon. Multiple well-established authors. Paperback. Reviews: =. Commentary tends to be brief and draws heavily on the extensive experience that most of its contributors have in the Roman Curia. Excessively thin paper and small print makes for text bleed-thru.

E. Caparros, et al., eds., Code de Droit Canonique, prepared by the University of Navarre (Spain) and Saint Paul University (Canada), (Wilson & Lafleur: Montreal, 1990). ~ 1500 pp. ISBN: 2-89127-153-X. Acceptable cite form: [commentator’s name], Caparros, Droit Can. Method: Canons in Latin & French, commentary in French, treatment is canon-by-canon (though a few canons are not discussed at all).
