For present purposes 'topical commentaries' are those treating entire books of the Code, parts of books, and sections of parts.

Those works that seemed to have been 'Highly regarded' or 'Well regarded' during the enforcement period of the 1917 Code are so noted. Most of these works were written by single authors and appeared in monographs.
