Directory of Dr. Peters' Writings by Canons and Topics

Overview

This page organizes most of my canonical writings according to individual canons and/or some special topics. Each entry consists of three parts: a citation to the writing and, where possible, a link to it; a summary of its content introduced by a square (▪ ); and, a short list of other significant canon(s) or topic(s) mentioned in the writing introduced with a carrot (>).

Using this page

Search entries by word(s) and relevant canon number(s). For example, to find my writings on resignation, search for "resignation" and for "Canon 187"; to find my writings on heresy, search for "heresy" and for "Canon 751."

Note on Code revisions

As promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1983 the Code of Canon Law consisted of 1,752 sequentially numbered canons. Over the ensuing decades John Paul himself (two canons), Benedict XVI (five canons), and Francis (scores of canons) modified, to greater or lesser degrees, many of these provisions. While revising law is a necessary part of any legal system the haphazard way that canon law is being changed causes confusion for scholars and practitioners.

At present, canons remaining as they were when first promulgated are simply listed as 1983 CIC XXXX; canons textually modified but retaining their original numbers are listed as Promulgating document XXXX; finally, canons both textually modified and renumbered are listed as Promulgating document XXXX olim c. XXXX, with "c." being short for 'original canon of the 1983 Code'.
